Gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and two others have been sentenced to life imprisonment in the 2006 Umesh Pal kidnapping case by a court in Prayagraj. Meanwhile, seven others, including Atiq Ahmed’s brother Khalid Azim, were acquitted in the case. Atiq Ahmed appeared in court today in connection with the kidnapping of Umesh Pal, a key witness in the murder case of BSP MLA Raju Pal. However, the Supreme Court rejected his request for protection during his UP police custody, though allowed him to approach the Allahabad High court for protection after claiming a threat to his life.
The case dates back to 2005 when BSP MLA Raju Pal was murdered. Umesh Pal, who had approached the police claiming to be a witness to the murder, was allegedly kidnapped at gunpoint in 2006 when he refused to retract his statement to the police under pressure from Atiq Ahmed. The police subsequently registered an FIR against Atiq Ahmed, his brother, and four others.

Atiq Ahmed and his brother were brought to the Naini Central Jail in Prayagraj amid heavy security after a 24-hour road journey from Gujarat. Large crowds were seen outside the local court in Prayagraj where the hearing of the Umesh Pal kidnapping case was scheduled. Visuals from outside the court show a long police cavalcade bringing Atiq Ahmed in large vans as crowds gathered on both sides of the road.
The Supreme Court bench, however, allowed Atiq Ahmed to approach the Allahabad High Court for protection after claiming a threat to his life in UP Police’s custody. “It is not a case where this court is going to interfere. Liberty granted to move an appropriate application before the High Court. Whatever is the process prescribed under the law will be followed,” the Supreme Court bench said, as quoted by the news agency PTI.
